The Last Thing I Didn’t Know

The O’Reilly series of technical books always feature a black and white line drawing of an animal on the front cover and a colophon page in the back. I never bothered to read the colophon page, but the big boldface word “Colophon” at the top did jump out at me because I didn’t know what it meant. I naturally surmised that a colophon was either a kind of animal, a genus of animal, or something to do with drawings of animals. I lived with this misapprehension for years until I wandered into the Colophon Café in Bellingham, Washington, which is located in a bookstore but has nothing in particular to do with animals. So now I know everything.
